When to change to winter tires? A Complete Guide

by Redakcja

With the arrival of autumn and the drop in temperatures, many drivers ask themselves: when should you change to winter tyres? Although there are no regulations in Poland requiring tire replacement at a specific time, road safety should be a priority. In this article, we will dispel any doubts about the timing of a tire change, tell you how to recognize that the time is right, and discuss the legal and technical issues related to the use of winter tires.

Why is it worth changing to winter tires?

Summer and winter tyres differ in the composition of the rubber compound and the tread structure. Summer tyres harden at low temperatures, losing grip, which increases braking distances and increases the risk of skidding. Winter tyres, thanks to a special rubber compound, remain flexible even in freezing temperatures, and their tread with deep grooves and sipes provides better grip on snow, ice and slush.

When to change to winter tires? The 7 Degree Rule

The simplest and most commonly used rule is the 7-degree rule. It says that when the average daily air temperature drops below 7°C and remains at this level for several days, it is a sign that it is time to change to winter tires. However, it is worth remembering that this is only a general guideline, and the decision to replace tires should be made individually, also taking into account weather forecasts and road conditions.

Factors influencing the decision to change tyres

In addition to temperature, the decision to change to winter tires is also influenced by other factors, such as:

  • Weather: If the weather forecasters predict sudden cooling, snowfall or black ice, it is worth changing the tires beforehand.
  • Road conditions: Even if the temperature has not yet dropped below 7°C, but there is black ice or snow on the roads, it is necessary to replace with winter tyres.
  • Driving style and routes: People who drive a lot, especially early in the morning or late in the evening when the temperature is lower, should change to winter tires earlier. The same applies to drivers who often travel routes outside the city, where road conditions can be more difficult.

Can you drive on winter tires in summer?

Although driving on winter tires in summer is not prohibited, it is not recommended. Winter tyres wear out faster at high temperatures, and their soft rubber compound has a negative effect on the braking distance and stability of the vehicle.

Legal regulations and winter tyres

In Poland, there are no regulations requiring the use of winter tires. However, Article 66(1)(1) of the Road Traffic Law states that the vehicle must be in good technical condition and equipped in accordance with technical conditions. This means that the tyres, regardless of the season, must be in good condition, with the right tread depth (minimum 1.6 mm) and no visible damage.

How to take care of winter tires?

To ensure that winter tires last as long as possible and ensure safety on the road, it is worth taking proper care of them:

  • Check the tyre pressure regularly.
  • Store tyres in suitable conditions (in a dry and cool place).
  • Check the condition of the tread and replace the tyres with new ones when the tread depth drops below 4 mm.
  • Balance the wheels after each tire change.

Summary

The decision to change to winter tyres should be dictated primarily by concern for your own safety and the safety of other road users. While the 7-degree rule is a good benchmark, it’s also worth considering weather forecasts, road conditions, and individual needs. Remember that properly selected and efficient tires are one of the most important elements affecting the safety of driving in winter.
